Instituto de Filosofia da Nova - Nova Institute of Philosophy

The Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) is a research unit of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

IFILNOVA’s main purpose is to develop research programs focused upon human action and value construction at the ethical, political and aesthetic levels. In order to achieve these goals, IFILNOVA develops research programs on the theme of values, normativity of rules and argumentation aimed at the study, development and investigation of philosophical theories and their application to social practices and problems. Within such a framework, IFILNOVA has achieved national excellence (it was rated Excellent in the last scientific evaluation developed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) and international acknowledgement in areas such as argumentation theory, pragmatics, and history of philosophy (more specifically, studies on Nietzsche and Wittgenstein).

The goal of the institute is pursued at different levels (theoretical development, application, outreach) through three distinct strategies, namely

  1. Development and application of new theories to empirical fields;

  2. Development of classic theories and their application to other theoretical areas: and

  3. Direct intervention into social practices.
