Ana Mira




Ana Mira is a researcher, choreographer, performer and teacher of dance and philosophy.


She completed her PhD in Philosophy/Aesthetics at IFILNOVA, Faculty for Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon, under guidance of Professor José Gil, as a visiting scholar of Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy, Kingston University (UK) and research fellow of Foundation of Science and Technology, in 2014. She completed her MA in Philosophy/Aesthetics also at Faculty for Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon and under guidance of Professor José Gil, in 2008. She completed her B.A. in Community Development at E.S.E Jean Piaget in 2004.


Ana Mira has been doing extensive contemporary dance training in Europe and USA (C.E.M. – Centro em Movimento, Fórum Dança, Independent Dance, Movement Research) and has been mostly influenced by Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Eva Karczag, Sofia Neuparth, Peter Michael Dietz e Howard Sonenklar. As dance performer she collaborated with Pauline de Groot (Amsterdam 2013), Russell Dumas (Liverpool 2004) and Rosemary Butcher (London 2011-2015). Her most recent choreographic works were At Once/Solo Performance Commissioning Project – Deborah Hay (Teatro Maria Matos, Lisbon 2010, funded by DGArtes), Três Estudos para Shihtao (Teatro Camões, Lisbon 2007) e Dueto (Festival Alkantara, Lisbon 2006).


Ana Mira is the author of the following dance and philosophy essays: “Listening bodies, in dance” (Lisboa: Relógio d’Água, forthcoming), “The feet understand: the film ABCDEFG, by Russell Dumas (1994)” (Barcelos: Sment, forthcoming), “Wings and flight: a sensorial document” (Lisboa: Universidade Lusíada, forthcoming) and “Here, on the brokenness of skin: a practice on dance and philosophy” (Inflexions: a journal for research-creation).


She was a visiting scholar at Tisch School of the Arts/New York University, Movement Research, New York Public Library of the Performing Arts (USA) and SenseLab (CA) as a research fellow of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (2007). Also,she developed a research program at Dans Studio Pauline de Groot (NL), funded by Gabinete de Relações Culturais e Internacionais/Ministério da Cultura (2002). She collaborates with the cultural association baldio | Performance Studies. And co-organizes the Performance and Philosophy Permanent Seminar at AELAB – Laboratory of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Artistic Practices, IFILNOVA.


She has been teaching somatic practices, contemporary dance, dance history, dance studies and dance and philosophy at Independent Dance/Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (UK), Faculdade de Motricidade Humana, Escola de Dança do Conservatório Nacional, ESTAL, Evoé – Escola de Actores, C.E.M., Fórum Dança, Balleteatro (PT), Experiencia Danza (ES) e Dans Studio Pauline de Groot (NL).
