Bio note

Robert Vinten has previously studied at the University of Glasgow (MA, Hons, Philosophy, 1997), Georgia State University (MA, Philosophy, 2000), the University of Reading, and Oxford Brookes University (PGCE, 2008). Both his undergraduate thesis (Glasgow) and his Master’s thesis (Georgia State) were about aspects of Wittgenstein’s philosophy (natural kind terms, and grammar, respectively). He is currently working on a doctoral thesis (funded by the FCT) concerning the relationship between Wittgenstein’s philosophy and social philosophy. This has involved looking at the relationship between Wittgenstein’s philosophy and various political ideologies (conservatism, liberalism, and Marxism) and he intends to continue this research by looking further into the relevance of Wittgenstein’s philosophy for problematic areas of social philosophy, such as freedom of the will, justice, and the relationships between the social and natural sciences.
