Bio-note

Susana Nascimento Duarte is a member of IFILNOVA's CineLab, and an Associate Professor at ESAD-CR/IPL, where she teaches 'Project in Sound and Image', 'Studies in Art', 'Laboratory of Experimental Film' and 'Studies in Communication'.

She holds a PhD in ‘Cinema and Television’ by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH/New University of Lisbon). Her PhD thesis was entitled “The figural in film: articulations and disjunctions of the seeable and the sayable”. 

She integrated the research projects Film and Philosophy. Mapping an encounter (IFILNOVA/FCSH/UNL) and False Movement: Studies on Writing and Film (CEC/FLUL). She is currently a researcher of the project Fragmentation and Reconfiguration: experiencing the city between art and philosophy (IFILNOVA/FCSH/UNL). 

She is the Interviews' Editor of Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image.

In her PhD thesis and in recent articles she has addressed such concepts as Lyotard’s figural, Foucault’s archive and archaeology and Deleuze’s statements and visibilities in connection to the cinematographic figural thinking of authors like Philippe Dubois, Nicole Brenez, D. N. Rodowick, and the work of directors like Jean-Luc Godard, Marguerite Duras, Harun Farocki or Peter Nestler.

She is currently working on the idea of cinema as an archaeological practice, focusing on films by the Straub, Harun Farocki, Louis Henderson, among others. 

She has co-organized, in this context, the Cycle of Meetings What is the Archive? and the Laboratories Art-Archive (Gulbenkian, 2017), Cinema-Archive (Cinemateca Portuguesa, 2018) and City-Archive  (Marvila's Library, 2019 ).
